WHO envisions way out of blindness via earlyintervention


世卫组织设想的盲目性出路通过earlyintervention.
BEIJING - The World Health Organization (WHOsaid on Thursday that blindness could beavoided in eight out of 10 cases with appropriate treatment or early prevention worldwide.
And the situation hereas Chinese experts saidis quite similarif not worse.
The WHO estimates that 246 million people have low vision and 39 million are blindparticularlyin developing countriesaccording to a release issued by the organization on World Sight Day,held annually on the second Thursday of October.
In Chinaat least six million people are blind and nearly 70 percent of the cases are caused bycataractssaid Chen Youxindeputy director of the ophthalmology department at Peking UnionMedical College Hospital. "But actually most of the cataract cases can be fully cured by medicalsurgery," he said.
More than 80 percent of those who are blindand another 12 million with low visioncanrecover their eyesight after medical treatmentChen said.
"Low awareness and strained economic conditions are mainly to blame for avoidable cases ofblindnessand currently most of the blind people suffering from cataracts live in theunderprivileged countryside," Chen said.
SimilarlyWHO surveys indicate that 90 percent of people with blindness or low vision worldwidelive in low-income countries.
Aside from the substantial impact that blindness or low vision has on a person's quality of life,there is also a strong economic impactnot only for the person affected but also for the familyand community giving supportaccording to the WHO.
Reducing blindness alleviates householdcommunity and national poverty and is linked toimproving access to educational and employment opportunitiessaid the release.
Oculist Zhang Chun with the Peking University Third Hospital urged the government to enhancethe medical capacity in eye disease diagnosis and treatmentparticularly in rural areas.
Even todaysome rural grassroots medical institutions can't perform cataract surgeries.
Meanwhileeducation on eye health should be largely improvedgiven that China has seen asharply rising epidemic of shortsightednessexperts suggest.

China sends French-made satellite into space

XICHANG, Sichuan - China's Long March-III2 rocket carrier sent a French-made telecomsatellite into orbit from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center Friday afternoon, marking the firsttime for China to provide launch service for a European satellite operator.

According to information and data received by the Xi'an Satellite Measuring and MonitoringCenter, the satellite and rocket carrier separated on schedule and the satellite is now in orbit.
It was also the 148th launch for the Long March rocket family.
The launch marked the first time for China to cooperate with a European satellite operatorsince the signing of a Sino-French satellite launch agreement in 2008.
The launch was carried out by the China Great Wall Industry Corporation and the ChinaInstitute of Rocket Carrier Technology, both under the China Aerospace Science andTechnology Corporation, as well as the China Satellite Launch and Tracking Control General(CLTC).
The W3C telecom satellite was built by Thales Alenia Space, a French satellite manufacturer,and is owned by Eutelsat, a leading provider of satellite communication services.
The W3C has a designed lifespan of 15 years and will provide television, radio, broadband,video and Internet service.

Ping-pong playing robots' debut in East China

A human-like robot plays table tennis on Oct 9, 2011. Human-like robots developed by Zhejiang University in East China made debut on Sunday. The two robots as shown can capture the track of the ball by a camera installed inside before making reactions. The robots, 160 cm tall and weighing 55 kilograms each, took the university four years to develop. The university also aims to develop robots that can do housework.
